Unexpected Things Narcissists Do When They’re Bored

We all get bored from time to time, but narcissists’ boredom doesn’t just affect them, but those they know as well.

You may be familiar with this. Suddenly, they change the way they treat you.

They act to get your attention, as if that’s something else you need in your life right now!

While their boredom may not come as a surprise to you, there are ways to prepare for what they want.

I like to think that being here now is the first step.

External Motivation: Essential

Narcissists rarely find happiness and satisfaction in their daily lives. Mindfulness is a concept we’re always told is good.

It’s good for our health. It’s positive for those suffering from anxiety or depression. Live in the moment, forget the past, and stop trying to anticipate the future.

Narcissists aren’t great at living in the moment, especially if there’s not much to do. They’re very good at planning or acting spontaneously.

Furthermore, they will deliberately celebrate their spontaneity because it will make them seem adventurous.

In reality, they can’t stand doing anything. A slow day means time to sit with self-loathing thoughts and realize that they are insecure, scared little children stuck in an adult’s body.

The need to relieve this boredom with a hobby is essential for them.

Poor people…

Pick Up A Fight Out Of Nothing

I think this is the most important thing people who deal with narcissists notice over time.

The need to pick a fight simply because there’s nothing else going on in their lives is the height of sadness.

I need attention.

Please look at me.

Listen to me.

React to what I say.

Be the one who suddenly needs to apologize.

Let me take control of this situation.

Please, forget how much I hate myself!

If a narcissist were brutally honest with themselves, these would be the things they would say out loud.

Instead, the noise comes from sarcasm. Insults. Provocative comments. Personal attacks on your appearance or tone of voice.

Or what about when you got home late, even though you were only 7 minutes late to the front door?

The food wasn’t cooked properly. You added onions, knowing they give them indigestion.

They’ve had a long day, and you’re asking too many questions. They feel like ignoring you because they know it makes you panic.

All of this will come to an end, as your respect is once again disregarded and replaced by an urgent need to provoke you.

All in the name of boredom.

Ignore People

Ignoring or ignoring someone gives the narcissist an opportunity to gain control.

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with what you said or did, but they can do it knowing you’ll chase them for a reaction, or react in a way that shows pain and sadness.

It’s satisfying for the narcissist; they thrive on seeing you suffer.

Your tears bring them joy, and they use them as fuel for their self-esteem.

Like a classic school bully, narcissists only feel happy when they realize they have power over you.

Suddenly treating you differently is a great way for them to feel they have control over your emotions, proving their power to themselves.

Don’t let them control you!

See it for what it is: cruel and unnecessary. No one deserves to be treated this unfairly, and if you’re being ignored now, take it as a sign that you’ve closed the chapter and put the past behind you.

Create Unnecessary Chaos

Hmm. Who did I upset today?

Who did I lie to?

Who did I annoy?

Who did I make anxious?

Who did I ask to stop and ask me what’s wrong?

It’s really weird, and you’d never expect it. Why?

Because you never know when a narcissist is going to get bored!

I might be right, and you’re heading into a meeting, and you get a rude text that sends you into a panic.

Or what about the morning of an important test or exam? Maybe a job interview? Maybe before your birthday (that’s classic narcissist!)

Whenever it is, it’ll pop up.

For the narcissist, it’s perfect.

For you, it’s not so much.

Mimicking Others’ Personalities or Interests

They just can’t find their own, can they?

Narcissists are usually fond of mimicking others, albeit secretly. Those most likely to be copied by narcissists are popular, kind, compassionate, and generous people.

Pillars of society!

The narcissist seems to think, “I like what I see here. Everyone seems to like and trust them. So I must make myself look like them!”

Mimicking their movements, their mannerisms, their likes, where they shop, their hobbies, their interests—you name it.

It’s so strange to me that a person can’t create their own identity, but narcissists aren’t always the best at being seen as authentic.

That’s why they steal parts of others!

Love Bombing Randomly

How does a narcissist expect to get the loving attention they so desperately crave if they don’t randomly bomb someone for that quick fix?

Lovebombing isn’t just for the narcissist’s spouse; it can be anyone.

Wow, you look amazing!

You’re so smart. How do you do that?

Hey, anything helps.

We should grab a drink and brainstorm this business idea.

My reward, honestly. Put your wallet away. I’ve got this.

Narcissists will use any means to get someone’s approval, and that will make a few things happen.

This, of course, will automatically provide the narcissist with a new source of support.

Secondly, it will mean an immediate ally if things get tough for them. They’ll have someone to support them, defend them as good and honorable people.

Anything to relieve that boredom.

Start posting vague or attention-seeking content online

Anything that sounds like a lie to get likes, right?

Narcissists are very good at this.

Either they post something rude, crass, filtered, or just half-truthful for people to respond to.

And the best part (come on, we all know what’s coming…):

I’m not going to write it here. I’m going to send you a private message.

So, if you want to know what’s wrong, you’ll have to ask them privately after the public display.

I find it kind of funny, and I let it slide without understanding it.

The narcissist is clearly bored! Don’t give them the pleasure of chasing their latest attention-seeking nonsense.

When a narcissist is bored, you might think everything will be fine—quiet, even.

Unfortunately, there’s no such luck. In fact, a narcissist’s boredom usually means the beginning of something you might have to prepare for.

When I find them at their most annoying, you know what that means?

Chaos in your life. As if you need more of it!
