The person with a narcissistic personality disorder has dragged him or her into the malignant narcissist’s pit—at the narcissist’s level, where the narcissist can blame him or her for all of the narcissistic behavior in the relationship, where the narcissist can rationalize it. Or she did do nothing wrong.
When the codependent is still addicted to trying to change the narcissist, get accountability or safety from that person, and return to the stage of idealization that occurred before the inevitable stage of devaluation – he or she will live in a toxic narcissistic war zone, and may start to believe the narcissistic personality and accept blame for the misbehavior.
There are two determining factors as to whether or not you have a narcissistic personality disorder. Do you have empathy and a conscience? Thus, are you capable of pathological lying, and manipulation to serve your agenda? Do you resent personal insults and have to act maliciously even because of a twisted personal view about someone hurting you? If under normal circumstances (aside from being in a narcissistic relationship) you don’t act this way, then you are not a narcissist.
