7 Things Narcissists Hide From Everyone (Even Their Closest Friends)

Do you think people are transparent these days? We all want to surround ourselves with real people who think, live, and love honestly. That’s what connects us.

If only I could!

Narcissists are only bound by their own bad egos, and they naturally give in to every possible means of being nice once they get close to someone else.

I’d even say that all narcissists are adept at keeping certain secrets from everyone, and that includes their friends.

If you want to know these seven things, look no further.

Friends? I know, right?

Even narcissists have friends, and I know you may find that hard to believe or even comprehend.

How can people love them willingly?

The most likely reasons are either that they are narcissists themselves, or that they are simply the type who feels wanted or needed when they are around.

What I hasten to add is that in either case, there won’t be much honesty in the friendship circle.

Impossible. Narcissists are as shallow as a pond, and the deeper you try to delve into it, the deeper you’ll end up falling.

Hiding: Easy Living

Ultimately, if there are things going on in your life that you want to hide, you’ll do it to make your life a little easier.

But—will it be easier? Those hidden things will still be there. They will still be there, even if you try hard to hide them.

I think it’s much better to face what’s going on with all your might.

Prove to yourself that you’re worth fighting for, and admit to the world that you’re not perfect, and that you need to find what you need to find.

On the other hand, if you’re a narcissist, you don’t want to admit that you’re not perfect.

When you’re in a sticky situation, people will say, “Wow, I thought you had it together.”

No.

A narcissist prefers to hide, and they’re good at hiding. So let’s take a look at exactly what they hide, even from their closest friends.

1 Insecurity

No narcissist wants to be an open book. If they were, all their fears would be immediately apparent to everyone.

I know how interesting this idea is, but we’re not happy with it right now.

Instead, we need to deal with the fact that their fears are repressed.

What they really think about themselves. How they see themselves under the facade they’ve built and put on display.

You know how narcissists are notorious for making others feel bad?

It stems from their self-loathing. It’s not because you’re a bad person, and it’s not because their opinions of you are honest.

All their apparent self-loathing does is distract them from how they really feel about themselves and what makes them insecure.

2 Fears

Fears are pretty common, aren’t they? Even if they don’t get in the way of our normal lives, I think there are things we’d all rather not see or do.

Whether you’re afraid of the dark, heights, flying, certain animals, or even if you don’t like deep, dark water like lakes, it’s okay to avoid them as long as they don’t take over your life too much. Someone who’s afraid of spiders wouldn’t bring out dozens of spiders for public entertainment, would they? But what you do in such situations is different from what a narcissist does.

Their fears are not up for debate. They’ll refuse to discuss them even with their closest friends, which seems strange to me.

When you get to know the narcissist’s personality in general, everything becomes clear.

They want to be the best, they like to appear confident, they refuse to succumb to any form of weakness, and they have strong, solid external connections to the world.

These fears aren’t real, and they certainly aren’t in their lives. I know you know they’re real inside, but what’s inside is what a narcissist never lets on.

3 Family Problems: The Real Problems

This is an interesting point, and I couldn’t get over it.

Narcissists never discuss family problems. Sure, they might say they’re upset or something, but beneath the surface, there’s a lot more going on in their minds that they don’t acknowledge.

Why?

Because the narcissist is always the cause! They have to be. Wherever they go, they cause problems, conflict, and drama.

The other side of this coin is the idealized image they strive to maintain.

If they start talking about all the problems they’re having within their family, people might start to get suspicious, or ask more questions than the narcissist can answer.

Absolutely not! Hide everything!

4 Their Need to Fit In

Narcissists want to know everything, be everywhere, see everyone, know all the gossip, and be the center of everything.

There’s no other preference for how they live their lives.

Sounds crazy, right?

You might think that if a narcissist has a friend, then they’re actually friends… but no.

Narcissists don’t know how to be friends, nor do they necessarily know how to keep them.

How can you be a real friend if all you do is pit people against each other, lie, cheat, and ruthlessly ridicule?

Exactly.

6 How Trouble They Cause

Narcissists won’t advertise how problematic they are. It wouldn’t do them any favors at all if they publicly announced that they’re addicted to drama and any form of emotional distress.

It’s their biggest secret, even from their closest friends.

7 Motives

Whose life am I going to ruin today?

Where can I cause the most conflict?

Who haven’t I used as a source of income lately?

Narcissists stay up all night plotting, scheming, and scheming. They do it just to get what they want.

Their ultimate goal is always to win, so the pieces of this puzzle must fit together.

It’s highly unlikely they’ll say:

You know what? I don’t like being friends with these people. I have to do something about it now.

You’ve been warned!
