8 Ways a Narcissist Will Punish You When You Stand Up To Them

Are you feeling brave? I’ll start by saying, good for you! This kind of feeling isn’t common for those who regularly interact with narcissists.

Something must have happened that made you want to confront them, and I don’t say that lightly.

So what is it? Or have you simply had enough?

The bad news is the narcissist’s revenge is in store for you, and here are 8 ways they get it when you confront them.

They Don’t Want Your Courage

While standing up and defending yourself may be empowering, the narcissist has a different opinion.

I don’t want you to think that you shouldn’t confront them as a result, because you absolutely should.

Narcissists like it when you obey them, listen to them, do what they say, believe them, and let them take control.

They don’t like it when you take the initiative and make your own decisions, because then they lose their power.

So be prepared…

Don’t Mess With The Dynamics

What works, works. That’s what narcissists love. They work hard to create their own toxic corner of the world.

The moment you start messing around, they’re in big trouble.

Standing up for yourself is messing with the dynamic, but that shouldn’t stop you.

If you’re usually the gentle, kind person who nods and does what’s told, the narcissist will suddenly find your spot.

When the narcissist is ready to punish you for daring to stand up for yourself, they’ll do it in these seven ways.

1 Blaming You

I find it really rude of you to raise your voice at me like that.

What do you feel you gain by talking to me like that?

How dare you be so rude to talk back to me!

This is all your fault anyway!

Whenever I hear someone tell me they’re to blame, I ask them the same question I’m going to ask you right now:

Really?

I mean, really?

Think about it.

Are you telling me it’s your fault because you believe it, or because you’re conditioned to believe it?

If I were a gambler, I’d bet it’s the latter. But here we are, and this is where we need to start addressing that belief.

Confronting a narcissist doesn’t put the blame on you. You’re not trying to start a fight or cause more conflict.

You’re expressing your opinions, and for once, the narcissist can’t hold onto them and change them.

2 Discrediting You

You’re wrong.

Yes, they tried to make me feel bad, but I know how badly they understand people, so I refuse to take the blame for that.

They don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re known for lying sometimes, so ignore them.

See how easy it is to discredit someone and make others feel sorry for you?

I regret to inform you that this is how narcissists behave when you try to take a stand against them.

They will bring you down faster than the blink of an eye, and this will be a punishment that will leave you feeling helpless.

This is the main reason they want their actions and abuse to be kept as secret as possible—so that no one suspects them. Times like these will prove them right, as they gain allies instead of enemies.

3 The Smear Campaign

Narcissists know how much you value your loved ones. The family who always have your back, or the friends you’ve made over the years who are a great source of comfort.

What about your coworkers, who know you well?

Maybe the neighbors? They love you. You always have a cheerful personality, and you’re always there when they need a helping hand.

I hate to say this, but you’ll have to say goodbye to some of them. I can’t tell you which ones, because it depends entirely on the narcissist and who they can exploit.

If you think you’ll be immune to a smear campaign, I want you to reconsider.

Narcissists love spreading lies and rumors, and if you confront one of them, it’s only going to get worse.

So, let this be a little advice for you:

Prepare for loss.

And you know what? I always say that the right people for you won’t leave you. If others are going to believe the narcissist’s lies, there’s no way to convince them, so save your energy.

4 The Silent Treatment

I’m sorry.

I won’t do it again.

I hate it when you shut up about me.

I was just trying to say what I was thinking.

I didn’t think you’d take it seriously.

It’s my fault.

I was right, I don’t know what I was thinking.

Do I need to tell you what’s going on here?

If I do, it’s like this:

These phrases and thoughts will come out when the narcissist’s silence toward you is working.

5 The Beast Wakes Up…

Unleashed, and out in full force for everyone to see and witness.

Or at least for you alone. If it was in front of everyone, your truths about them would be obvious, right?

Narcissists are smart like that. So, if you resist them, they’ll make your life hell with as brutal an attitude as possible…

…but only for your eyes.

6 Insult: Doing whatever they can!

You’re pathetic.

I don’t know why I care.

What a waste of time knowing you.

You disgust me.

I can’t stand you like this.

Anything that undermines your good character even more.

If it works, great. That’s exactly what they want to do.

7 Threats and Intimidation

This can get very dangerous, and I know of cases where the police have had to intervene.

Ultimately, this is the reality of what you’re dealing with, and the likelihood of it escalating to that level is very real.

All I’m saying is: take care of yourself, do the right thing, and put your needs first.

There’s no room for threats or intimidation in your life.

8 Getting Rid of It

Does getting rid of the person make you feel comfortable? This may not be the first time a victim has had a strong, albeit toxic, relationship with their abuser.

It’s difficult to break free and become independent, but it’s very possible.

Use getting rid of the person to your advantage, move on, and never regret confronting them.
