3 Traits Narcissists Seek in Others – Are You a Potential Target?

One of the main personality traits that narcissists are known for is that they have extremely high confidence and self-importance.

However, there are also a host of other traits that are often overlooked when dealing with narcissism. Traits such as an excessive need for admiration, lack of empathy for others, arrogance, jealousy, cruelty, and a tendency to exploit others for their own gain are all part of the way a narcissist deals.

These traits mean that only certain people can handle a narcissist in their daily personal lives—in a way that narcissists unconsciously “target” these particular people to fit their personality and needs.

So what are these types of people and how do you stop yourself from becoming involved with a narcissist?

  1. Smart and successful people
Narcissists believe they are the cream of the crop and with that comes a belief in higher intelligence and the need to succeed.

Naturally, they will surround themselves with others who possess the traits they feel they possess, so they choose to spend time with intelligent individuals who are well-trained, skilled, and successful in their profession.

  1. Extreme perfection
Narcissists choose to spend time with people who strive for perfection in everything they do, while constantly questioning themselves.

This type of behavior allows the narcissist to feed their idea of perfection and greatness, but the fact that the person is always doubting themselves will make the narcissist feel better about themselves, knowing that they are better.

  1. Self-confidence issues
Finally, narcissists choose to surround themselves with people who have underlying self-esteem issues because they can feel in control of the relationship as they are perceived as better. The narcissist preys on people who need validation and acknowledgment because they are vulnerable and easily manipulated.

Although all of these traits may make a narcissist seem extremely negative, none of these behaviors are intentional or carried out with malice (in general). If someone you know fits the traits of a narcissist, it does not mean that they are a terrible person or that they should be avoided at all costs. Just make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into before you become close to this person.

Educate yourself on the narcissist’s behaviors and even how to handle certain situations a narcissist may be involved in and there can be advantages to having a narcissist in your life.
